Emergency Hydrocortisone Injections
When to give!
- Patients with adrenal insufficiency are at risk of an adrenal crisis when unwell. They should follow the instructions in their emergency letter which should be updated yearly
- An injection of Hydrocortisone should be given without hesitation if any of the following symptoms of illness are present:
–Persistent diarrhoea & vomiting
–High fevers associated with lethargy & pallor
–Decreased level of consciousness
–Serious injury such as broken bones, head injury
–Any procedure requiring anaesthesia or surgery
- If in doubt, give the injection & take your child to hospital for immediate review.
- Use the dosing guide prescribed by your medical practitioner.
